Bank of America said today it will boost the number of its small business bankers in three New England states, adding 50 positions including 14 in Connecticut.

Connecticut’s largest bank said the hires are part of the company’s previously-announcd plan to hire 1,000 small business bankers across the nation by mid-2012.

In Connecticut and Rhode Island, the number of companies with fewer than 500 employees exceeds 400,000, the bank noted, and small business owners need to develop relationships so bankers understand their individual needs. That number includes self-employed people who do not have any employees.

Bank of America’s competitors in Connecticut, both regional and community banks, are making similar expansions into small business banking.

Last year, a coalition of unions and activists in Connecticut sharply criticized Bank of America for not doing enough to help small business owners, a charge the bank denied. The coallition included the Service Employees International Union and the Connecticut Citizen Action Group.
